Sporty Opel Newcomers: Astra OPC and Astra OPC Station Wagon

New Astra top-of-the-line models with 192 hp Turbo for superior performance

Rüsselsheim/Leipzig. Opel is presenting to the public its latest high-performance sports models, the Astra OPC and Astra OPC station wagon, at the 12th Auto Mobil International in Leipzig, Germany (April 13 to April 21, 2002). Both OPC versions (Opel Performance Center) are powered by the 141 kW/192 hp, 2.0 ECOTEC turbo engine which make speeds of more than 230 km/h possible. Thanks to rapidly available torque of up to 250 Newton meters, the four-cylinder, four-valve power unit provides the two Astra top models with excellent sprint capabilities. Starting this fall, sport-oriented customers will be able to choose between the compact three-door hatch and the five-door station wagon with its large load area.

The new Astra OPC is designed to appeal to buyers who value fun driving and sporty design. Thus, both models were trimmed expressly for high performance. The 2.0 liter, 141 kW/192 hp ECOTEC engine with turbocharger, already familiar to drivers of the Astra Coupé Turbo, Astra Cabrio Turbo and the Zafira OPC, provides the necessary propulsion. The high-revving, high-tech engine with a very compact, integrated turbo system offers maximum torque from 1950 rpm up and accelerates the Astra from zero to 100 km/h in under eight seconds*. The four-valve motor also helps the two top-of-the line Astra models to produce maximum speeds of 240 km/h (station wagon: 231 km/h)*, qualifying them for the sports car league. Despite this exceptional performance, the Astra OPC and OPC station wagon require only 8.9 liters and 9.5 liters of fuel respectively, per 100 kilometers* (MVEG) and they already fulfill the stringent Euro 4 emissions standard.

The compact sport models are also 20 millimeters lower in front and 10 millimeters lower in back than their Astra model range counterparts and they are fitted with DSA (Dynamic Safety) suspension with more firmly adjusted shock absorbers and 215/45 ZR 17 tires (three-door: 215/40 ZR 17) mounted on alloy wheels with a sporty OPC design (7.5 J x17). The new OPC models also come with a special dynamically tuned Electronic Stability Program (ESP), TC Plus traction control and a new generation, four-channel anti-blocking system. An efficient 16-inch brake system with ventilated discs all around provides for effective braking.

Body and Interior: Sporty, Exclusive and Refined

The new Astra sport models also distinguish themselves visually from their more mainstream counterparts with the four exterior colors Arden Blue, Star Silver, Sapphire Black and Magma Red. The understated, sporty design is also characterized by a distinctively moulded grille, shaded front and rear lights, special sport mirror along with body-colored bumpers and side skirts. The exclusive nature of the cars is underscored by OPC logos on the grille and trunk. The three-door Astra OPC also has a rear spoiler, the station wagon version comes with a roof spoiler. Sporty elegance is also seen in the Astra OPC model interior with Recaro sports seats in partial leather for the driver and front passenger and a leather-covered sport steering wheel. The extensive standard equipment package also includes air conditioning, full size front and side airbags and Active Head Restraints for the front seats.

OPC and OSV: Opel Specialists for Sporty High Performance

Following the limited first edition of the three-door Astra OPC in 1999 (2.0 liter, 118 kW/160 hp gasoline engine) and very successful sport van Zafira OPC, the Astra OPC and Astra OPC station wagon are numbers three and four in Opel's OPC series. These fast-selling OPC models were developed by the specialists at the Opel Performance Center GmbH and at Opel Special Vehicles GmbH. The especially high performance and sporty production vehicles receive their characteristic features, such as front grille, side skirts, rear apron and wheels, at OSV in Rüsselsheim. The OPC projects profit directly from Adam Opel AG's long years of motor sport activity and from the innovative strengths and know-how of the International Technical Development Center (ITDC). More sporty OPC brand top models, which together form a special Opel model series comprised of especially dynamic vehicles, will follow in the near future.
