Chevrolet introduces the "Cruze" compact lifestyle vehicle, jointly developed by GM, Suzuki

General Motors Japan Limited; Suzuki Motor Corporation

General Motors Japan Limited (GM Japan) and Suzuki Motor Corporation (Suzuki) announced today that they will market the Chevrolet Cruze, a jointly developed compact lifestyle vehicle, beginning November 1 through GM Japans GM AutoWorld sales channel and Suzukis ARENA sales channel.

The Chevrolet Cruze will be marketed exclusively under the Chevrolet nameplate. The new Chevrolet Cruze is the result of close collaboration between GM and Suzuki. Suzuki provided its expertise in the development of compact cars for consumers in Asia. GM contributed specific Chevrolet design cues and driving characteristics, which inspire an active lifestyle.

The Chevrolet Cruze will be manufactured at Suzukis Kosai Plant near Hamamatsu in Shizuoka Prefecture. GM AutoWorld and Suzukis ARENA will sell 1.5-liter and 1.3-liter models in different trim options, respectively. Consumers will be able to select from an array of exterior colors and interior trim colors.

To offer a sporty, comfortable performance that can accommodate a wide range of driving styles, the Chevrolet Cruze has 15-inch wheels, 195 mm of ground clearance and a specially GM-tuned suspension. Smooth acceleration, quietness and superb handling are further enhanced by the spacious interior.

Vehicle Highlights:

A GM and Suzuki Jointly Developed Vehicle

The Cruze features Chevrolets innovative, distinctive design characteristics. It is built on Suzukis proven small car platform, which offers a high-quality ride, comfort and safety. The result is a superb driving performance.

A Quiet, Comfortable Interior with Ample Space

The Cruze achieves a high level of interior comfort with an array of new innovations, including an exceptionally quiet, low-vibration engine, a fresh new body design and newly developed, fatigue-free seats.

Advanced 4WD System and "EMCD"

The Cruze offers a new Active 4WD system, which features a wide track and 15-inch wheels to handle a variety of driving conditions. It also offers an Electro Magnetic Control Device (EMCD) which is an electronically controlled coupling system.

The Chevrolet Cruzes Major Features Include:

1. Exterior

The Chevrolet Cruze, designed by GM, reflects Chevrolets special strengths and sense of dynamics for a lifestyle vehicle.

  • A bold crossbar runs horizontally through the middle of the front grille. At its center is Chevrolets distinctive gold bow tie.
  • The Cruze features vertically split, large-size headlights.
  • A distinctive flared blister fender offers a sense of stability.
  • The uniquely American design and a large rear bumper emphasize boldness and stability.
  • Round four-valve taillights integrated into the rear bumper and five-spoke wheels represent Chevrolet design cues.

The shape emphasizes a sense of unity with a wrap-around rear window, slash-surface smoked lens, and highly visible and safe high-mount turn signals and reverse light.

  • Six exterior colors (two of which are exclusive) have been designated for GM AutoWorld models.
  • Five exterior colors (one of which is exclusive) have been assigned for Suzukis Arena models.

2. Interior

GM designers created the interior, which gives the Cruze Chevrolets distinct American

look. The instrument panel incorporates a black and silver two-tone arrangement and is finished with gilt paint, offering a sporty appearance.

The interior trim is also available in two tones. Buyers can choose from either the black and red or black and gray combination. Each lend the Cruze a sophisticated character.

Spacious, Quiet and Comfortable Interior Space

Despite its compact size, the Cruzes spacious interior accommodates five adults comfortably. The interior environment does not sacrifice comfort or practicality and is a major contributor to its comfortable driving performance.

  • The vehicles long wheelbase and wide track provide a roomy interior. Designers achieved ample head clearance thanks to an overall height of 1,560mm (2WD model without roof rails). The Cruze features generous legroom with the hip-point position of the rear seat slid far back, and an upright front seat position gives the driver a wide frontal view.
  • The tilt steering function and driver-side seat lifter are standard on all models, so that driving positions can accommodate occupants of all shapes and sizes.
  • The highly functional instrument panel accommodates an audio system and an additional, high positioned DIN slot for a navigation system .
  • Specially designed large front seats with considerable seat width and backrest height provide lumber support, significantly reducing fatigue. In addition, the 4WD model incorporates a standard driver-seat heating.
  • The easy-to-operate rear seat can be configured into a variety of arrangements, to further increase the size of the highly versatile cargo area.
  • Ample and convenient storage space includes cup holders and multiple storage trays.
  • The Cruze is equipped with a standard air conditioning system with pollen filter (the upper trim models feature an automatic air conditioning system), anti-bacterial interior materials and UV-ray cut-off glass (for the front door windows).

3. Highly Reliable and Innovative Features

An active torque control-type four-wheel-drive (4WD) system features a newly developed electronically controlled coupling system called EMCD (Electro Magnetic Control Device). It receives signals from the ABS control unit. It also helps ensure stability in a wide range of driving conditions and improves fuel efficiency.

Large 15-inch tires, providing a minimum ground clearance of 195mm, suit a variety of road surface conditions ranging from paved roads to mountainous terrain.

The new-generation all-aluminum DOHC engines deliver quietness, strong power and environmental-friendliness. The 1.5-liter engine propels the GM AutoWorld version of the Cruze, while the 1.3-liter engine powers the version sold by Suzukis Arena. Incorporating a quiet timing chain and reducing the resonance effect of the engine head-cover, these engines cut noise and vibration. For higher engine output and higher fuel efficiency, all models feature Variable Valve Timing (VVT).

The newly developed 4-speed automatic transmission (AT) is well suited to driving on hills. The integrated computer control and AT offer a smooth feel when shifting gears, while improving fuel efficiency. This system is designed to apply the effect of engine braking through early downshifting on downhill roads, while restraining upshifting on uphill roads.

The Cruzes front suspension has MacPherson struts, which use shock absorbers equipped with built-in rebound springs. Its rear suspension was developed by GM, with special tuning specifications based on Suzuki's unique and proven Isolated Trailing Link (ITL) layout.

The electric power steering improves fuel efficiency from 3 to 5 percent compared to a conventional hydraulically assisted steering. A speed-sensing program ensures stable steering at any speed.

4. Higher Level of Safety and Lower Emissions in a Global Car

Collision Safety

Incorporating a lightweight shock-absorbing body, the Chevrolet Cruze guarantees world-class safety in the event of a collision. Considerable mass reductions achieved using unique technology preserve natural resources, improve driving performance and increase fuel efficiency.

Passive Safety Standard Equipment

    • Dual front air bags
    • Front seat belt pre-tensioner
    • Front seat belt force limiter
    • Rear headrest
    • Side door beam (integrated into the front doors)
    • Shock absorbing pads (integrated into the front doors and the B-pillars)
    • ISO-FIX-compliant child seat fixing mechanism

Active Safety Standard Equipment

    • 4-wheel ABS with brake assist
    • EBD (Electronic Brake-force Distribution)
    • Front ventilated disc brakes
    • High-mount turning and brake lights

All Models Certified as "Excellent Low-Emission Gas" Vehicles

Both the 1.5-liter and 1.3-liter engines offer high performance, and reduce Hydro Carbon (HC) and Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) exhaust emissions by about 50 percent compared with 2000 levels. The National Land and Transportation Ministry certify both engines Excellent Low-Emission Gas vehicles. The Cruzes VVT mechanism contributes to clean performance. This mechanism continuously adjusts the inlet valve open and close timing according to driving conditions. This improves output characteristics, fuel efficiency and exhaust gas cleansing performance in a well-balanced manner. The multi-point Electronic Petroleum Injection (EPI) fuel-injection system controls the air-fuel mixture ratio for optimum performance. The exhaust system is divided into two systems. An independent catalyst placed in each system precisely controls the air-to-fuel mixture ratio.

Recycling of Resources

In addition to the all-aluminum engines, about half of the plastic parts used in the car are made of recyclable polypropylene. The door trim can easily be sorted and the structure easily disassembled for recycling.

Sales Targets

The annual target sales volume of the Chevrolet Cruze is 20,000 units, including GM AutoWorld and Suzuki ARENA models.
